When a computer is riddled with problems — slow, crash-prone, full of leftover software — endlessly tinkering can take longer than starting fresh. A clean install of Windows wipes the slate and very often restores a machine to like-new, without the cost of replacing it.
When a clean install makes sense

A true clean install goes further: it wipes the drive completely and rebuilds from scratch, which is the surest way to clear a deep malware infection or a badly tangled system. The reset is the gentle option; the clean install is the fresh start.
The golden rule: back up first
A clean install erases everything on the drive. What's involved
After backing up, Windows is reinstalled fresh, then fully updated, the correct drivers added, your software reinstalled and your files restored. None of it is especially difficult, but doing it well — getting the right drivers, not missing data, setting it back up the way you like — is fiddly and time-consuming, and a missed step can mean lost files or a device that's not quite right.
Will it actually fix the speed?
A clean install cures software-related slowness brilliantly. But if the machine still has a mechanical hard drive, the single biggest improvement is an SSD upgrade — often done at the same time as the reinstall for the best of both. If a clean install doesn't help at all, that can be a sign the hardware itself is failing and worth a proper look.
