How to Set Up a Guest Wi-Fi Network
A guest Wi-Fi network is one of those quiet upgrades that makes your home or office both friendlier and safer. It gives visitors internet access without handing over your main password, and — more importantly — it keeps them, and the growing pile of cheap smart gadgets we all accumulate, safely away from your computers, files and printers. It takes about five minutes on most routers, and once it's done you'll wonder why you didn't set it up years ago. Here's how.
Why a guest network is worth it
Every device on your main Wi-Fi can potentially "see" the others — your laptop, your network storage, your printer, the files you share at home. That's fine for devices you trust, but it's not ideal for a visitor's phone, a contractor's laptop, or a £15 smart plug whose security is anyone's guess. Cheap smart-home gadgets are a well-known weak point: they're rarely updated and can become a back door onto your network. A guest network solves this neatly by giving those devices internet access while walling them off from everything that matters. As a bonus, you never have to read your real Wi-Fi password aloud across the room again — and you can change the guest password any time without re-connecting all your own devices.
1. Log into your router
Type your router's address into a web browser — it's usually printed on a label on the router itself, along with the login details (often something like 192.168.0.1 or a web address). Sign in with the admin username and password. If you've never changed the default admin password from the one on the label, now is a very good moment to do that too: a router still using its factory admin password is an open invitation.
2. Find the guest network setting
Look for a section called "Guest Network" or "Guest Wi-Fi", usually within the wireless or Wi-Fi settings. Almost every router made in the last decade has this feature built in; if you genuinely can't find it, your router may be old enough that an upgrade is worth considering anyway.
3. Enable it and name it
Switch the guest network on and give it its own name (SSID) and a separate password. Don't reuse your main Wi-Fi password — the entire point is that the guest password can be shared freely and changed often without affecting your own devices. Pick something easy to read out or type, since guests will be entering it on small screens.
4. Isolate it from your main network
This is the step that actually does the protecting, so don't skip it. Turn on the option usually labelled "isolate", "AP isolation" or "no access to local network". This stops anything on the guest network from reaching the devices on your main one — so a guest's phone (or a compromised smart gadget) gets the internet and nothing else. If your router offers a bandwidth limit for guests, you can set that here too, so visitors can't saturate your connection.
5. Save and test
Save the settings — the router may briefly restart — then connect a phone to the new guest network to check it works and reaches the internet. That's it: you can now share guest access with a clear conscience.
Smart-home gadgets: give them the guest network
Beyond visitors, the guest network is the ideal home for smart bulbs, plugs, cameras and speakers. These devices rarely need to talk to your laptop — they just need the internet — and keeping them isolated means that if one is ever compromised, it can't be used as a stepping stone to your personal files. A few smart-home apps want devices on the same network as your phone during setup, so set those up first, then move them over.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving isolation off. Without it, a "guest" network is just a second door into the same room — turn it on.
- Reusing your main password. Defeats the purpose; use a separate one.
- Forgetting the router admin password. Securing guests but leaving the router itself on its default login is a bigger hole than the one you closed.
