Why Your Laptop Overheats (and How to Cool It)

A laptop that's hot to the touch, runs its fans like a hairdryer or shuts itself down mid-task is struggling to keep cool — and it's telling you so. Heat is the number-one enemy of electronics: it makes a machine slower today and shortens its life tomorrow. The encouraging news from the workshop is that overheating is one of the most fixable laptop complaints there is, and the causes are usually straightforward. Here's what's going on and what to do about it.

Why overheating matters (beyond hot knees)

When a laptop gets too hot, it deliberately slows itself down — a self-defence mechanism called thermal throttling — to protect its chips from damage. That's why an overheating machine feels sluggish as well as hot: it's running with the handbrake on. Push past that and it will shut down outright to save itself. Longer term, sustained heat ages the battery faster, dries out thermal paste and stresses every component. Sorting heat isn't just comfort; it's the cheapest life extension a laptop can get.

Why laptops overheat

  • Dust. The overwhelming number-one cause. Over months and years, dust packs into the fan blades and the fine fins of the heatsink, choking the airflow that carries heat out. Every laptop breathes; every laptop fills with dust.
  • Blocked vents. Working on a bed, sofa, cushion or duvet smothers the air intakes underneath — the classic "Netflix in bed" overheat.
  • Old thermal paste. The compound that conducts heat from the processor to the cooler dries and cracks over the years, leaving heat trapped at the chip even when the fan is spotless.
  • Heavy load. Gaming, video editing or fifty browser tabs push the hardware — and therefore the cooling — hard, especially in a warm room or summer heat.
  • A stuck or failing fan. If the machine is hot but eerily silent, the fan itself may have failed — that one needs attention promptly.

What you can try first

  • Use it on a hard, flat surface — or a stand — so air can flow underneath.
  • Gently blow dust from the visible vents with short bursts of compressed air (see cleaning your laptop safely).
  • Open Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) and check for a runaway program pinning the processor at 100% — sometimes the "overheating laptop" is really one stuck app working it to death.
  • Close what you're not using, keep it out of direct sun, and give it breathing room.
  • Check for updates — occasionally a buggy driver or process is behind constant background load.

Warning signs that mean "act now"

Some symptoms shouldn't be waited out: sudden shutdowns under load, fans permanently at full speed, a casing genuinely too hot to rest on your lap, performance that collapses after a few minutes of work, or a hot smell. These say the cooling system can no longer cope — and every session in that state is wearing the machine. A laptop that's hot and silent (no fan noise at all) has likely lost its fan entirely and should be looked at before the processor suffers.

Gaming laptops: a special mention

High-performance and gaming laptops pack desktop-class heat into a slim chassis, so they live closer to their thermal limits than ordinary machines and feel dust's effects sooner. If your gaming laptop's frame rates have sagged and the fans scream where they used to hum, that's textbook throttling — and a strip-down clean with fresh thermal paste routinely restores the performance it had when new. Do cooling pads help?

A common question, and the honest answer is: a little, sometimes. A cooling pad blows air at the underside of the laptop, which helps machines that draw air from below and struggle on desks — but it treats the symptom, not the cause. If the fan and heatsink inside are packed with dust, a cooling pad is a breeze against a blocked chimney; the heat still can't get out from where it's made. They're a reasonable supplement for a gaming laptop being pushed hard in summer, and a poor substitute for a clean. Spend on the clean first; add the pad after if you still want the extra headroom.

When it needs a professional

If it still runs hot after the basics, the dust you can't reach is the problem — packed between the fan and the heatsink where surface cleaning can't touch it — and the thermal paste is likely past its best too. Fixing that properly means opening the laptop safely, without damaging ribbon cables and connectors along the way.
