Laptop Won't Turn On? A Step-by-Step Checklist
A laptop that won't start is alarming, but it doesn't always mean a major fault — and it very rarely means your files are gone. Before you panic, work through these checks in order; several take seconds and fix the most common causes.
1. Check the power
Make sure the charger is firmly connected at both ends and the wall socket actually works (test it with something else). Look for a charging light on the laptop. Try a different socket and, if you can, a known-good charger — faulty chargers, frayed cables and loose charging ports are among the most common reasons a laptop appears "dead". If the battery was completely flat, give it a few minutes on charge before trying.
2. Force a power cycle
Disconnect the charger, then hold the power button down for 15–30 seconds to drain residual power. Plug the charger back in and try again. This "hard reset" clears a surprising number of completely-unresponsive states.
3. Is it on but the screen is black?
Listen for fans spinning or look for keyboard and power lights. If it's clearly powering up but the display stays dark, you may have a screen or backlight fault rather than a power problem. Connect an external monitor — if a picture appears there, the laptop works and it's the screen that needs attention.
4. Disconnect everything
Unplug USB drives, docks, SD cards and accessories — a faulty peripheral or even a USB stick left in can stop a laptop booting. Remove them all and try again.
5. Watch and listen for clues
Beeps, flashing light patterns, a fan that roars then stops, or a logo that appears and freezes all point to different faults — memory, drive, or motherboard. Note exactly what happens (and when), as it helps pinpoint the cause far faster.
Common underlying faults
When the basics don't help, the usual culprits are a failed battery or charging circuit, a faulty power button or board fault, failed memory, or — if it powers up but won't load Windows — a dying drive or corrupted system. A spill beforehand changes things entirely; see what to do after a spill.
