PS5 Showing No Signal? HDMI Faults Explained
Your PlayStation 5 powers on, the fan spins, but the TV just says "No Signal". It's a common and alarming fault — and very often it comes down to the HDMI port rather than the whole console, which means it's a repair rather than a write-off.
Rule out the simple things first
- Try a different HDMI cable and a different HDMI port on the TV — cables fail more often than people expect.
- Test the console on another TV if you can, to confirm the issue is the console and not the telly's input.
- Check the TV is set to the correct HDMI input.
- Boot in Safe Mode (hold the power button until the second beep) and choose "Change Video Output" to reset the resolution — useful if it only lost signal after changing settings.
How to tell it's the HDMI port
If the console makes its normal sounds, the controller pairs, and the disc drive works — but no TV or cable gives a picture — the HDMI port is the prime suspect. If you peer into the port you can sometimes see bent or pushed-in pins. A console that gives a picture only when the cable is held at a certain angle is a textbook sign of a loose or cracked port.
Why the HDMI port fails
The HDMI port takes a lot of mechanical stress — every plug and unplug, plus any knock to a connected cable (a pet, a foot, moving the console with the cable in), can bend or crack the tiny internal pins or the solder joints holding the port to the board. Once they're damaged, no cable will give a picture even though the console is otherwise working perfectly.
What the repair involves
Replacing an HDMI port is a precise, board-level job: the damaged port is desoldered and a new one fitted under magnification, then tested. It's skilled work — not a DIY fix — but done properly it fully restores the picture and costs far less than replacing the console. Your games and saves are completely unaffected.

- Leave enough slack in the cable and route it so nothing tugs on it.
- Never move the console with the HDMI cable plugged in.
- Insert and remove the cable straight, not at an angle.
