Tablet Won't Charge? Common Causes & Fixes
A tablet that won't charge is frustrating — but it's very often a cheap, simple fix rather than a dead battery. Work through these common causes in order before assuming the worst, on iPad and Android tablets alike.
1. Check the cable and plug
Cables fail far more often than tablets do. Inspect the cable for fraying or kinks and the connector for bent or discoloured pins, then try a different cable and a different mains plug to isolate which is at fault. Charging from a laptop or TV USB port is often too weak to charge a tablet (or only trickles), so use a proper mains charger — ideally the right wattage for your model.
2. Clean the charging port
This is the fix people least expect and it works remarkably often. Pocket lint and dust pack tightly into the port over time and stop the connector seating properly, so the cable feels loose or won't charge at all. Power the tablet off and gently clear the port with a wooden or plastic toothpick (never anything metal) — you'll sometimes pull out a surprising plug of compacted fluff.
3. Force a restart
A frozen tablet can appear not to charge when it's really just locked up. Hold the power button — or the documented button combination for your model — to force a restart, then try charging again.
4. Give it time
A deeply drained battery can take 15–30 minutes on the charger before it shows any sign of life or displays the charging symbol, so don't give up after a couple of minutes. Leave it on a known-good mains charger and be patient.
5. Rule out the battery or port hardware
If none of that works, the most likely culprits are a worn-out battery or a failed charging port — both common and both repairable. Tell-tale signs: charging only at a certain cable angle (port), or the tablet draining fast and shutting down with charge left (battery). A swollen back or a screen lifting at the edges means the battery is failing and should be replaced promptly for safety — stop charging it.
