When Is It Time to Replace Your PC?
We're big believers in repairing and upgrading rather than replacing — it's better for your wallet and the planet. But every machine eventually reaches the point where a new one is the smarter spend. Here's how to tell which side of that line your computer is on.
Signs replacement is worth considering
- It's slow even when healthy. If an SSD and more RAM still won't make it keep up with what you need, the core hardware (processor) has simply aged out.
- Repairs are stacking up. When the cost of fixing approaches roughly half the price of a comparable replacement, the maths starts to favour replacing.

- Parts are hard to find. For very old machines, sourcing a screen, battery or board can become impractical.
- It can't do the job any more. If your work has outgrown it (heavier software, bigger files), no amount of repair changes that.
When repair still wins
A single, well-understood fault on an otherwise capable machine is almost always worth repairing — a cracked screen, a dead battery, a failed drive. So is a cheap upgrade that removes the one bottleneck holding it back; the classic example is an SSD turning a frustrating old laptop into a perfectly usable one for a fraction of replacement cost. Age alone isn't a reason to replace — many machines run happily for years with a little care (see extending your PC's lifespan).
The 50% rule of thumb
A simple guide we use: if a repair or upgrade costs less than half of a suitable replacement and buys you a couple more good years, repairing is usually the sensible call. Above that, especially on an already-old machine, replacing tends to win. It's a guide, not a law — a sentimental or perfectly-specced machine can be worth more to you than the numbers suggest.
Don't forget your data
Whichever way you go, make sure your files are backed up first. If you do replace, your data can be transferred to the new machine, and the old one wiped and recycled responsibly rather than sitting in a drawer.
