10 Ways to Make Your PC Last Longer
A computer doesn't have to be replaced every few years — that's a schedule set by marketing, not by the hardware. With a little care, most machines stay fast and reliable for far longer, saving you serious money and sparing the planet a lot of e-waste. As a repair workshop, we see exactly what kills PCs early and what keeps them going. Here are the habits that genuinely extend a computer's life, on Windows and Mac alike.
Keep it clean and cool
- Clear the dust. Blocked vents trap heat, and heat is what wears electronics out fastest — it degrades the battery, dries the thermal paste and stresses every component. Keep vents clear and have the inside cleaned periodically (see how to clean a laptop safely).
- Give it air. Don't run laptops on beds, sofas or cushions that smother the intakes; use a hard surface or a stand, and keep desktop towers out of enclosed cabinets.
Look after the software
- Install updates. They fix security holes and often improve performance and stability — see keeping Windows and drivers updated.
- Trim start-up programs. Fewer things launching at boot means a faster, smoother machine every single day (see slow start-up fixes).
- Uninstall what you don't use. Less clutter, more free space, fewer background processes competing for resources.
- Keep some free disk space. A drive that's nearly full slows right down and wears faster — aim to keep at least 10–15% free (here's how).
- Restart regularly. A genuine restart clears memory and lets updates finish; sleeping the machine for weeks on end lets clutter quietly build up.
Protect it
- Use sensible security. A malware infection can mean hours of clean-up or a full reinstall — be wary of dodgy downloads, attachments and scams, and let the built-in scanner do its job.
- Use a surge protector. Power spikes from storms or grid switching can damage components silently over time or kill a machine outright — a cheap surge strip is the cheapest insurance a desktop can have.
- Handle laptops gently. Carry them in a padded bag, never lift by the screen, and look after the charging cable — frayed chargers and damaged ports are two of the most common repairs we see.
- Mind the battery. Avoid extreme heat, don't leave it constantly at 0% or 100%, and use charge limits where offered (see battery health).
Upgrade rather than replace
- Add an SSD or more RAM when it starts to feel slow. These low-cost upgrades often add years of useful life for a fraction of the price of a new machine — frequently the difference between "needs replacing" and "good as new".
The five-minute yearly service
Cars get an annual service; computers deserve one too, and yours takes minutes. Once a year: blow the dust out of the vents, empty the recycle bin and downloads folder, uninstall anything you haven't touched, check updates are current, and confirm your backup actually works. That last one matters most — a long-lived PC and a tested backup together mean nothing short of disaster can really hurt you. Put a recurring reminder in your calendar and it becomes automatic.
What actually kills computers early
It's worth knowing the enemy. In the workshop, the machines that die young almost always fall to the same few causes: chronic heat from years of blocked vents, liquid spills that were "left to dry" instead of treated, drops and knocks while switched on (especially fatal to old mechanical hard drives), cheap unbranded chargers that stress the power circuitry, and batteries left swelling until they damage the case around them. Notice what's not on the list: age itself. A well-treated five-year-old laptop routinely outlives an abused two-year-old one. Every habit above targets one of those killers — which is why the boring basics genuinely work.
Know when to let go
Honest care includes honest limits. When the core hardware has genuinely aged out — it's slow even after an SSD and a clean-up, security updates have ended, or repairs are stacking up — pouring money in stops making sense.
